Mission Staycation Day Set for December 1

Holiday empanadas featured in “Seasonal Palate” cooking class

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

MISSION, Texas – The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) invites the community to join us for the December Mission Staycation Day on Saturday, December 1 from 3 -6 p.m. at the Chamber in downtown Mission.

December’s farmers market will feature seasonal items from Rio Grande Valley farmers and artists, showcasing their locally-grown produce, herbs, arts and crafts. The Market offers both outdoor and indoor, facilities with vendors that sell a variety of goods for all ages.

During the month’s “Seasonal Palate” cooking class, Mission Staycation Market Chef Mikal Marrus will show students how to make a variety of baked and fried holiday empanadas using produce and seasonings from the market. Market vendors that will be featured in December’s class include Yahweh’s Farm, Abundant Grace, St. George’s Orthodox Church and Perennial Favorites. Seats fill quickly! Arrive early for the 4 p.m. class.

The Market’s “Seasonal Palate” cooking class is held monthly and recipes are inspired by the vendor’s seasonal goods. In this class, students learn to cook using seasonal produce, bringing out the best in farm-fresh ingredients. Students also develop improvisational skills to adapt to the changing seasons. Chef Mikal teaches his classes with easy-to-follow cooking techniques and educates students about the nutritional value of the items in each dish. Arrive early to save your seat for this entertaining and educational class. Be sure to “like” the Mission Staycation Day Facebook page for your chance to win a seat at the Chef’s Table. You can also purchase a seat at the Chef’s Table for $35 to receive hands-on experience with Chef Mikal.

For more information about December Mission Staycation Day or for vendor information, contact the GMCC at 956-585-2727 or email yolanda@missionchamber.com.

TOASTMASTERS MEET SATURDAYS

AT PHARR LIBRARY

Toastmasters meet at 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon at the Pharr Memorial Library, 121 E. Cherokee, 2nd floor, onthe first and third Saturdays of each month. Members practice public speaking and leadership skills in a friendly, supportive environment. Some individuals join Toastmasters to overcome their fear of public speaking, others to improve the skills they already have. Some want to improve their grammar or practice speaking in English. Some enjoy meeting people and enlarging their circle of friends. Whatever your reason, you are invited to join others in practicing communication and leadership skills. There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. Visitors are always welcome.
