Aug. 2nd Thursday Family Nights – “Kids Organic Cooking” 7:00pm to 8:00pm at Quinta Mazatlan, McAllen Wing of the World Birding Center. Guest speakers with live animals, puppet shows, treasure hunts, music, and arts & crafts in the park! The evening offers an opportunity for families to enjoy the great outdoors and connect to nature. Aug. 4th Mini Workshops for Teens & Families – Journaling

1:00pm to 4:00pm at Quinta Mazatlan, McAllen Wing of the World Birding Center. Learn all about the different ways to capture your outdoor memories. From sketching to writing to scrapbooking and everything in between you will connect to nature in a new way. The workshop will include time in the classroom and time on the trails doing guided journaling sessions. Aug. 7th Nature Discovery Camp- Cold Blooded Creatures AGES 9 to 12

The camp sessions focus on different nature-related themes with hands-on science investigations and experiments-they won’t realize they are learning while having fun! The nature center offers a Thorn Forest, Discovery Center, Butterfly Garden, Hummingbird Lane, Bronze Sculpture Trail and Ruby Pond for tons of investigative opportunities. The Nature Discovery Camps are from Tuesday to Friday, 9 am to 12:30 pm. Each camp incorporates art, science experiments and interpretive trail walks. Children are welcome to attend one or all the camps. Please register in advance. Reptile Ruckus!

Summertime is when reptiles are truly out and about! Bring your family
and enjoy interesting reptile displays, giving kids and parents a close-up look at these amazing creatures while learning about some of their special adaptations.



Join our staff naturalist, Gilbert Martinez, as he showcases these wonderful creatures and teaches participants the incredible facts about these critters. A walk will be scheduled during the program, allowing participants to see reptiles in their natural habitat. Everything from sunbathing turtles to slithering snakes can be seen here at the EWBC!

will get to go home with their own turtle and/or snake craft!



Have fun making a little turtle while learning how to make it with recycled materials! Also, make a garden snake by using construction paper as well as a coral or milk snake by using pipe cleaners and beautiful beads!

“Perseid Meteor Shower Party at Bentsen State Park–RGV State Park”

Get a chance to see meteors shoot across the night sky and explore nature at night at Bentsen State Park’s Seventh Annual Perseid Meteor Shower Party. On Saturday, August 11th, from 8:00 pm to 12:00 am, Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, World Birding Center will host this annual event that features night hikes, live animals, and viewing areas to see the awesome spectacle that is the Perseid Meteor Shower.

The Perseid Meteor Shower takes place every year from early to mid-August, and is one of the most consistently active meteor showers of the year. The peak of the meteor shower is usually August 11th through the 13th. As many as 60 meteors per hour are usually seen near the Perseus constellation in the northeast portion of the sky. The Perseid Meteor Shower Party is a family friendly event that offers great views of the night sky in a safe area away from the light pollution of local cities.

The Perseid Meteor Shower Party is an event for children and adults. This event is free with paid admission to Bentsen State Park. Admission fees are $5.00 per person or $3.00 per person for groups of ten or more people. Children ages 12 and under enter the park for free. Doors open at 7:00 pm to allow visitors a chance to see the park before dark.

Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs to view the night sky during this event as well as drinking water and insect repellant in case of mosquitoes.

In this program, participants will have the opportunity to view the constellations, planets, various bright stars asnd the bright, shiny moon through telescopes! Summer Schedule at Bentsen-RGV State Park, World Birding Center

Life is better outside this summer when you are having fun at beautiful Bentsen–Rio Grande Valley State Park & World Birding Center. The entire family is invited to participate in a variety of nature based programs such as Dragonfly and Butterfly walks or explore after dark to seek out Creatures of the Night!

Binoculars and bicycles are available for rent at our Park Store or bring your own. Plus, you can enjoy Free Fishing at Bentsen State Park. Once you’ve paid the park entrance fees, no one needs a fishing license or stamp, as long as they are inside the state park! However, bag limits and other regulations will still apply, and be enforced.

Learn more about our native habitats and animals by joining our experienced roving Naturalists as they explore the park. All you need is your hat, drinking water, sunscreen, camera and a thirst for adventure. Check out why you can’t stay indoors this summer at Bentsen-RGV State Park!
