Heart of the Valley” Health, Fitness & Wellness Fair

The McAllen Chamber of Commerce Health Fair Committee invites everyone to participate in the 28th Annual “Heart of the Valley” Health, Fitness and Wellness Fair, Sunday, November 20, 2011 from 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the McAllen Convention Center.

The Chamber sponsors this event to promote health awareness and education to the community. Also, the fair helps medical, fitness & wellness exhibitors to promote their businesses while giving back to the people from our communities. Through this health fair the community learns about the latest treatments, procedures, services and technology available in the Rio Grande Valley.

Exhibitors at the health fair will offer thousands of free health screenings. Among those are cholesterol, X- Rays, diabetes, blood pressure, vision/glaucoma, dental, chiropractic, bone density, live fitness routines, among others. Over 6,000 Rio Grande Valley residents and Winter Texans take advantage of all the services offered at the health fair.

The fair also includes a Children’s section to promote health and wellness in children. Dozens of door prizes are given away and entertainment is provided for the whole family as well as health and safety education.

The McAllen Chamber of Commerce “Heart of the Valley” Health Fair is the largest in the Rio Grande Valley and is an excellent opportunity for health industry businesses to promote themselves. An Annual Event… join us!
Night of Lights is Edinburg’s Holiday Celebration that traditionally occurs the first Saturday in December. Night of Lights kicks off with live family entertainment, music, food booths, games and more. Also, don’t miss the beautiful lighted parade, full of brightly decorated floats, plus the ever popular visit from Santa Clause! The parade takes place on a Saturday, beginning on the corner of University Dr. & Sugar Rd. and ending at the Hidalgo County Courthouse Parking lot (Town Square). Local schools, businesses and organizations take part in the festive parade, where they cheerfully decorate floats, vehicles and marching units for children and families in the Edinburg area to enjoy.

Tour Rancho Lomitas with the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands

Take a tour of the beautiful Rancho Lomitas and learn about the historical uses and interesting properties of native plants! This winter, the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands and World Birding Center will take small groups to this native oasis north of Rio Grande City. Ranch owner and ethnobotanist, Benito Treviño, will lead participants through a tour of the ranch and discuss how knowledge of local plants and their practical uses have helped people survive in the Rio Grande Valley for hundreds of years.

The Edinburg Scenic wetlands will be offering two trips to Rancho Lomitas in the coming months. The first tour will take place on Saturday, December 3^rd, and the second on Saturday, January 7^th. The cost for each Rancho Lomitas tour will be $20.00 for EWBC members and $25.00 for non-members. Participants will depart from the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands at 7:30 am and return at about 3:30 pm. Space is limited, so please call ahead to reserve your space.

Ride along with the park’s biologist and learn about the latest wildlife sightings, nature phenomena, and get a chance to see some of Bentsen’s wildlife. This is an easy ride on paved or dirt roads. Length of ride is approximately 5 miles.
